The NGO Board of Kenya is the body charged by the constitution of Kenya to register and regulate the NGO sector in Kenya. This body which started operations in 1992 has a public directory which shows all the registered NGOs in Kenya. According to the public directory there are 4194 registered civil society organizations in Kenya.
The NGOs Co-ordination Board is a state corporation and it was established under the Non-Governmental Organizations Co-ordination Act of 1990. Under the said act, these are the prescribed functions of the board:
- To prescribe rules and procedures for the audit of the accounts of NGOs.
- To receive and discuss the annual reports of NGOs.
- The board is supposed to develop and publish a code of conduct for the regulation of NGOs and their activities in Kenya
- They are also charged with providing policy guidelines to the NGOs for harmonizing their activities to the National Development Plan for Kenya.
- Additionally, the NGOs Co-ordination Board is supposed to advise the government on the activities of the NGOs and their role in national development within Kenya.
- They’re also mandated to receive, discuss and approve the regular reports of the NGOs Council and to advise on strategies for efficient planning and co-ordination of the activities of NGOs in Kenya.
- Lastly, the board should facilitate and co-ordinate the work of all national and international NGOs operating in Kenya.
