The World Resource Institute and the One Tree Planted NGO have teamed up to start restoring Makueni’s forest cover. Together with other players such as the county government to restore the forest cover in that county.
Makueni has suffered the tough pangs of drought and famine occasioned by lack of enough rain. But that will all change once the forest cover starts being restored as part of the Kenya Kwanza government and UNEP efforts to plant at least 15 billion trees in Kenya.
According to One Tree Planted, restoration of the forest cover helps mitigate climate change, preserves and protects water resources, and maintains healthy soils.
One Tree Planted is an international organization that focuses on preserving forests all over the world. They have planted more than 97.8 million trees all over the world. The organization urges their donors to donate in dollars because each tree goes for one dollar. Therefore if you donate $40, it means that you’ve donated 40 trees.
In Kenya, they’ve so far worked to restore the Kijabe forest. “One of the forests we are planting in, the Kijabe Forest, is only about 5,000 hectares, but a community of almost 200,000 people depend on it for water, wood, and agriculture,” writes One Tree Planted.
