COP 27 came and went with a lot of fanfare and pomp. As always the who’s who in the world graced the event and made their contributions. Thousands of dignitaries from all over the world travelled to Egypt and gave their views about climate change and adopting better practices to save the planet.
While concerns about climate change are genuine, you need to remember that industrialized nations are the biggest contributors to carbon emissions. China, India, United States and others have prospered because of rapid industrialization and as a result global warming has taken root.
Therefore, it’s puzzling that the beneficiaries of rapid industrialization and the biggest contributors to the emission of greenhouse gases would demand that developing nations minimize industrialization for the sake of saving planet earth.
There is no denying that the climate has been affected adversely due to global warming. However, undoing it won’t be done by preventing developing nations from industrializing. If the developed world genuinely wants to prevent an environmental crisis they should commit the funds donated to help poorer nations industrialize in a safe manner.
In the clamour for cleaner energy, funding should be channelled to ensure that it’s easily accessible and affordable for those who can’t.
Merely telling less developed nations to abandon manufacturing and industrialization so as to save the planet is in of itself ridiculous and duplicitous.
