The United Nations Climate Change Conference COP27 was concluded at Sharm el-Sheikh in Egypt resulting in impressive numbers and stats according to the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC) which organizes the annual conference.
This year the conference attracted participants from over 140 countries with world leaders such as US President Joe Biden, UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres and others gracing the event. The following are stats that were birthed from that conference:
27 countries representing 60% of global GDP and 33% of the world’s forests have joined the Paris Agreement.
$2.6 billion or Ksh 270 billion has been spent to restore forest cover.
Public and private donors have committed $ 4.5 billion since COP26 to restore forest cover in the world.
According to New York Times, over 200 of the world’s greatest businesses and civil society groups have signed a letter urging governments at COP 27 to stick to a minimum temperature threshold of 1.5 degrees.
It is said that the earth has already warmed an average of 1.1 degrees and they’re saying that the world is on its way to heating up to 2.1 to 2.9 degrees.
