The Kenya National Commission on Human Rights is currently running a media training on human rights in Kitale town, Trans Nzoia County. KNCHR in partnership with the Norwegian Embassy is taking media practitioners through a seminar which equips journalists with skills on how to report on human rights in Kenya.
One of the areas that KNHCR is highlighting is holding public institutions accountable. For example, unwarranted arrests by the police regardless of the political divide should not be tolerated.
Secondly, the media should be more sensitive when covering children. Lately, we have children who were filmed by their teachers imitating inappropriate acts on their fellow students as a form of punishment. In the videos, the children were obviously agitated and tormented. The media should avoid violating the right to human dignity for these children by not posting their faces.
Additionally, according to KNCHR, partnerships with the media are key to ensuring that coverage of human rights happens accurately and professionally. Organizations should look for areas of synergy with the media such as trainings and seminars.
This will foster strategic partnerships and more comprehensive reach on the ground.
