4. International Community of Jurists condemns the arbitrary arrest of demonstrators by the National Police Service.
“Regrettably, ICJ Kenya observed and documented numerous human rights violations perpetrated against Human Rights Defenders participating in the assemblies and exercising their democratic rights. ICJ Kenya strongly condemns the use of excessive force by the National Police Service (NPS) and the unwarranted arrest of the Human Rights Defenders during the march. We are increasingly concerned about violating the rights to freedom of expression, peaceful assembly, and association, as enshrined in the Kenyan Constitution’s regional and International Human Rights Instruments,” said ICJ in a statement.
5. 32 human rights defenders were arrested by the police yesterday and are currently holed up in Central Police Station in Nairobi. Activists such as former Chief Justice Dr. Willy Mutunga, Lawyer John Khaminwa and photojournalist Boniface Mwangi and other activists have been at the station demanding for the release of the detainees.
6. Social Justice Centers Working group submitted petition to the National Assembly protesting the high cost of living and the right to protest.
7. Civic Freedoms Forum organizations call on the government to invite stakeholders to discuss the Public Order Act which gives stipulations on protests and picketing. This comes after Mbeere North MP Geoffrey Ruku proposed that organizers of protests should be held liable for the destruction of property and loss of lives.
