Dr Raymond Omollo the Interior PS yesterday complained about the prevailing non-compliance that is widespread in the NGO industry. He decried that only 30% of all active NGOs filed their returns and call for more accountability on the part of the CSOs. According to the 2021/2022 NGOs report, only 3,005 out of 9,794 active organizations filed their annual reports. The 3,005 organizations received a total of Ksh 179.5 billion and spent Ksh 185.5 billion.
The PS deemed it unacceptable that there are low levels of compliance with the existing legal and regulatory frameworks. He said that non-compliance gave a loophole to criminal entities financing their activities through money laundering.
“Dr Raymond Omollo has described as unacceptable the low levels of compliance with the existing legal and regulatory frameworks, adding that it is enough reason to infer that the culprits are involved in shady activities including terrorist financing,” it was indicated in the PS’s statement released to the media.
The Non-Governmental Organizations Co-ordination Board of Kenya launched the annual NGOs week at the Kenyatta International Convention Center (KICC). In a fan fare filled event the upper echelons and the who’s who of the NGO industry. Dr. Raymond Omollo the Principal Secretary for Interior and National Administration launched the NGOS Week 2023 together with the Board Chairman Kibara Gichira.
According to the Executive Director of the board Mr Mutuma Nkanata, NGOs spent a total of Ksh 185.5 billion in the 2021/2022 financial year. Ksh 118 billion was spent on project implementation, Ksh 49.7 billion was pumped into personnel emoluments while Ksh 18.4 billion was channeled into administration costs. Ksh 4.4 billion went into tangible assets.
A total of 71,096 people were employed by these organizations.
