In light of the death of two-year-old Baby Travis, questions remain about the state of public hospitals and their response to emergencies. It’s particularly puzzling when the emergency involves a child much less a two-year-old. You would expect a child whose immune system and ability to fight sickness and foreign antibodies is weaker than an adult’s.
But Travis’ mother Judy Muthoni said that when she arrived at Kenyatta National Hospital the doctor demanded that she pays Ksh 20,500 if the baby was to be attended to. Eventually, after more than 16 hours, young Maina succumbed to the fork jembe lodged in his head. Senate Committee on Health is currently investigating the occurrence.
There are organizations that focus on children and ensure that they’re protected and nurtured accordingly.
