Ukraine is experiencing the toughest crisis since the Chernobyl disaster now since Russia invaded the country in what Russian President Vladimir Putin calls a “special military operation”.
So far Ukraine says that there are more than 100 victims while 340 others have been injured in the fracas, bombings and missile attacks.
Civil societies have been at the forefront, providing aid to vulnerable Ukrainians such as children and Ukrainian refugees who are fleeing the country. It’s reported that 422,000 Ukrainians have fled the crisis and gone to neighbouring countries such as Poland.
The following civil societies are on the ground in Ukraine providing aid where it’s mostly needed:
UNICEF
It has been active in Ukraine since 2014 when the tensions began. UNICEF is working with local governments and civic organizations to provide nutrition and healthcare for Ukrainian children, particularly those in areas that are experiencing the conflict firsthand.
UNHCR
The global organization is in Ukraine helping the Ukrainian refugees find settlement in neighbouring countries.
International Community of the Red Cross
For eight years now the ICRC has been partnering with the Ukrainian Red Cross Society to provide food, water and other necessities.
Doctors without Borders
Right now this organization is assessing the medical needs of Ukrainians without access to healthcare. At the same time, it’s looking for ways to get teams from other countries to help.
International Rescue Committee
IRC has been at the forefront urging countries to open up their borders to receive Ukrainian refugees. So far the organization is using donations to make a difference in uplifting families affected by the conflict financially. Simultaneously, they are also enriching the children’s education during this time of crisis.
Voices of Children
This organization was among the first to highlight the plight of children when the invasion started on the 23rd of February 2022. VOC provides psychological and psychosocial support to children during crisis. They’re also helping pregnant women deliver their babies safely.
