The United States Agency for International Development (USAID) through its President’s Emergency Plan for AIDS Relief (PEPFAR) has been operating in different countries for the last 20 years. They have staged different interventions and so far the following numbers represent the impact that they’ve had.
When they started in 2003 only 50,000 infected Africans had access to life saving medication and treatment. But now they’ve crossed the seven million milestone.
“95% people who received a viral load test are virally suppressed, meaning that they can live longer, healthier lives and the virus can no longer be transmitted,” notes USAID.
HIV Prevention
USAID and their partners have supported more than 2 million members of key populations with HIV prevention services.
In 2022 USAID initiated almost 230,000 members of key populations in HIV prevention medication.
Supporting vulnerable populations
Right now USAID supports 5.8 million orphans and vulnerable children and their families affected by HIV. These could be families that were bereaved by a family member succumbing to HIV or losing their ability to provide for the family due to illness.
The services that they provide include child healthcare, education support, HIV specific testing, care, and treatment, parenting skills building and facilitating access to maternal and child healthcare.
In 2022 USAID contributed to supporting over 2.3 million adolescent girls and young women aged 10-24 years with combination HIV prevention services.
For such disruptive, effective impact we commend the USAID and their partners and wish them all the best as they do what they do best.
