In a fresh twist in the Noordin Haji vs civil society groups saga, Transparency International Kenya has withdrawn the award they had given Mr Haji. This has not been a good week for the relationship between the Director of Public Prosecutions Noording Haji and civil society groups.
In a letter dated 23rd May 2023 addressed to Mr. Noordin Haji and signed off by Sheila Masinde the Executive Director of TI Kenya, Masinde outlines their reasons for revoking the Leadership award that they bestowed on him in 2019.
“We write to you regarding the Leadership Integrity Award (State/Public Officer) that was awarded to you in 2019 by Transparency International Kenya. The Leadership Integrity Award was, at that time, bestowed upon you in recognition of the role played in the criminal justice process, particularly in ensuring the prosecution of serious corruption cases and providing strategic direction to the Office of the Director of Public Prosecution (ODPP),” writes Sheila.
“Regrettably, we have received public petitions and conducted an assessment based on concerns raised by the public and our partners championing integrity in Kenya. These petitions have raised serious allegations regarding the withdrawal of high-profile corruption cases, including those for which you were previously recognised, resulting in the loss of public funds,” the Executive Director notes.
This comes in the same week that the TI Kenya and other organizations which form the National Integrity Alliance stormed the PSC offices protesting Haji’s nomination to be the Director of the National Intelligence Services. Haji is yet to respond to the allegations. Read the story here.
