During the weekend the news bulletins have been awash with the tragic story of the gruesome murder of LGBTQ activist Edwin Chiloba. Chiloba’s body was found on Friday in Eldoret town stuffed in a metal box. As law enforcement authorities try to piece the case together and get to the bottom of it, NGOs have added their voice to the public outcry.
Various civil society organizations such as Kenya National Commission on Human Rights, Amnesty International Kenya and others have released statements condemning the killing of the model and activist. They have called on the authorities to conduct thorough investigations and bring the perpetrators to justice.
The following are the various statements
Amnesty International Kenya:
KNCHR: The Commission in line with its mandate to protect human rights, and in recognition of the provision of Resolution 275, calls on the National Police Service to conduct speedy but thorough investigations into the gruesome killing and to keep Kenyans updated. This is a call for justice for Edwin and those like him.
Akina Mama wa Africa: We condemn the increasing incidence of violence and other human rights violations, including murder, rape, assault, arbitrary imprisonment, and other forms of persecution of persons on the basis of their imputed or real sexual orientation or gender identity. We look forward to the initiation of a transparent and thorough investigation into Chiloba’s murder and the implementation of justice by the Republic of Kenya.
Q Initiative CBO- We urge the government o Kenya, which has been indifferent as countless lives have been lost, to address the underlying issues that contribute to inequality and heinous crimes against LGBTQ+ Kenyans.
