The Kenya National Commission on Human Rights released a report yesterday after monitoring activities in the election period. They have 150 monitors across all counties in Kenya and these are the findings that the monitors came up with.
Since February 2022:
5 people have died in campaign-related activities.
2 were killed in aspirants’ vehicle accidents
3 succumbed to injuries inflicted by opposing political fractions
County updates
Trans Nzoia County
Vehicle belonging to a Ford Kenya gubernatorial candidate hit a by-stander woman. The vehicle was subsequently burnt to ashes.
West Pokot County
Lorry carrying more than 120 supporters of a KANU MP aspirant was involved in an accident. Six people were injured and one woman died.
Baringo, Elgeyo Marakwet, West Pokot and Marsabit counties are still under a dawn to dusk curfew.
Mandera County
A United Democratic Movement political party vehicle was sprayed with bullets by unknown gunmen. Two elderly occupants sustained bullet injuries.
Nakuru County
Four young men were shot dead on 14th July 2022 allegedly by police. The police commander stated that the officers were defending themselves because the victims had been shooting arrows at them. This incident keeps building tension and could lead to voter apathy or suppression.
Nairobi County
Attacks were meted out on police in Jacaranda gardens.
Kisii County
A police officer was injured during the chaos that flared during the IEBC briefing exercise.
There were 50 cases of violence during campaigns which largely affected members of the public.
There have been 44 cases of threats, harassment and intimidation reported from monitoring of inflammatory speech on political platforms and the media.
There are 73 cases of inducement and undue influence in Nairobi, Bungoma, Kakamega, Isiolo, Kiambu, Kilifi, Kisumu, Kwale, Meru, Migori, Mombasa, Nakuru and nine others.
KNCHR’s monitors have documented 44 cases of misuse of public resources.
The KNCHR’s report reveals that there have been 146 incidences of children appearing in political activities.
Roseline Odede, the current KNCHR chair said that they will release additional 100 members of staff to the field starting Monday next week. “The Commission continues to urge members of the public to teach out to KNCHR through our toll free hotline number 0800 720627 and SMS number 22359 in case of any unsettling electoral situations,” added Odede.
