According to the newly released 2021/2022 NGO Sector Report by the NGO Coordination Board health was the most preferred sector of operation by newly registered NGOs followed by relief and education. 164 organizations representing 17.3% chose to operate in areas concerning health.
148 organizations representing 15.6% preferred relief, and 137 new organizations representing 14.5.% preferred education. “Other sectors comprising sports, housing and settlement, energy, children, animal welfare, media, and road safety were at 2.5% (24),” says the report.
When it comes to spending, health was at the top. The report revealed that NGOs spent a total of Ksh. 118 billion in project implementation. The largest chunk of this amount went into health projects. “Thirty-one per cent of the money received was spent in implementing health-related projects in Kenya, followed by children at 10.4% and education at 10%,” according to the board’s published findings for the year 2021/.2022.

The report revealed that of the Ksh 118 billion spent by NGOs on project implementation, a total of Ksh 102 billion (86%) was spent in Kenya while the remaining Ksh 16 billion (14%) was spent in other countries.
